SilverSneakers was established in 1992, and is now the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. For Island Doctors patients, it is fondly known as a heart-healthy aerobic fitness program that helps older adults take greater control of their health through physical activity and optional social events. The equipment includes chairs, hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and specially sized balls.
The CDC supports physical activity as essential for healthy aging, and that older adults should get 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity every week and muscle strengthening activities for all major muscle groups on 2 or more days a week. Throughout the past several years, Island Doctors has experienced significant improvement in our patients physical as well as emotional well being, when they participate with this free program associatied with Medicare Advantage participation. Once they start the program they most always continue. What we like most is that the program works with our patients needs on an individual basis.
From a cost savings point of view, the Silver Sneakers program allows seniors on a fixed income an opportunity to have a full membership to high end facilities and amenities-such as the YMCA. Healthy lifestyles along with proper nutrition allow our members to enjoy a higher quality of life. This form of preventative healthcare and wellness also allows Medicare Advantage programs to improve their benefits and lower co-payments during subsequent open enrollment periods, currently from October 15th- December 7th. It's a great relationship, because everyone wins.
