Lifting A Weight… Off Your Shoulders: Exercising With Arthritis

“I can’t work out today. My arthritis just always gets in the way.”

Does this sound familiar?

Exercise might seem like a monumental task when your body is in relatively constant pain. After all, how are you supposed to move around normally, let alone get involved with fitness without hurting yourself further?

But it’s actually not impossible to exercise while living with arthritis. In fact, it can actually help you feel better in the long-term and include easily attainable goals! So try not to sweat it before you get moving — if you want to take care of your fitness endeavors here’s what you need to know:

It Will Benefit You In The Long Run

Exercise is vital, regardless of your lifestyle or current medical conditions. Plus, working out can actually help improve your quality of life with arthritis, as working out can lead to a better sense of balance, stronger bones and increased muscle flexibility.

What’s more is, according to John Hopkins Arthritis Center, there are physiological benefits to exercising with arthritis, too. When you indulge in a little fitness, you’re less likely to deal with other health issues down the road, like coronary artery disease, diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and more.

It’s Not Impossible.

The Arthritis Foundation reports that the best way to start exercising with arthritis is to start light. Start with small weights and fewer reps, and then work your way up to what feels comfortably challenging. Similarly, don’t be afraid to make any modifications in order to make certain moves or strength exercises more attainable. Exercise that is high-intensity or competitive in nature is not recommended.

Regardless, the more you exercise and learn what your body is capable of, the more you can learn your limits, work your way up, and feel comfortable with a new, appropriate workout regimen! But remember — if you feel pain for more than two hours after your workout, you’ve worked your body too hard. Wait a few days and then take it easier next time.
